In the airport last night (traveling all day, made no time to blog, my apologies), my husband observed an all-star type football game on tv in the baggage claim area. I immediately dropped into a state of depression: the mere thought of 5 months of tightly-controlled television time, pre-recorded games and witty ESPN commentary makes me want to hide in my proverbial geek closet.
However, I want to turn a new leaf this season. There is no reason that I can't be both geek and sports aficionado. I want to sound intelligent while my husband holds his favorite beverage and barks at the officials (although, since we'll be watching Seminoles Football most of the time, the football penalties are probably deserved. The moral of this story? Here is a list of some decent "learning about American football" websites:
First, let's go straight to the source, the Offical Rules of the National Football League. Although it reads to me like the Florida Statutes, they are broken down into manageable bits and the language is simple enough for non-footballers to understand.
The football for wives website is pretty entertaining. They are definitely plugging the book (and I'm not really all that into the For Dummies series, but if it gets you where you need to be, then rock on), but it's also an easy interface. You pick one tab, then the other, and read to glory.
I have always been and will always be a fan of How Stuff Works, and their Football information is no exception. I am especially appreciative of the explanation of the different positions and the images that they use to show how the players line up.
Of course, NFL and College Football are entirely different beasts with entirely different fans. But more on that when I'm done making Party Food for my husband and his friends...

If this is successful, let me know. I shudder at the thought of football season.
